The brothers of Social Friendship Lodge #42 in York, PA, have awarded the Voni B. Grimes Scholarship to two deserving students. This scholarship honors the legacy of Vonidoe “Voni” Buster Grimes, who was born on December 23, 1922, in Bamberg, South Carolina, and passed away on January 26, 2018, in York, PA. He moved to York with his family at a young age.
Brother Grimes proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his service, he worked at Cole Steel and later becam
e an administrator at Penn State York. He is fondly remembered throughout the city of York for his many contributions.
In recognition of his impact, his name is inscribed on the monument at the east corner of Market and George Streets. The city also honored him by renaming the College Avenue Gym as the Voni B. Grimes Gym. He was a founding member of the York County Parks and Recreation Board, where his name is listed as Secretary on all county park signage.
Brother Grimes was actively involved in numerous organizations, including the York Yacht Club, Crispus Attucks Association, the Chamber of Commerce, and Heartland Hospice, where he volunteered. He was a dedicated member of Social Friendship Lodge #42 and held the esteemed rank of 33rd Degree Mason in Nimrod Consistory #9.
