History of Sons of Light Lodge No. 120

It is with justifiable pride that we the members of Sons of Light Lodge No. 120 may trace our history back into the theatre of time long past.

Since this Lodge had its inception, the very course of history throughout the known world has gone through a series of drastic and unimaginable changes.

We of Sons of Light Lodge escaped not the unsparing ravages of the past war era. Death, starvation, and the pangs of deep remorse were the constant companions of this ill begotten scourge.

During those days and years, Sons of Light like so many institutions, saw their hard-earned savings disappear when the very banking foundation eroded under the terrifying extravaganza the depression brought forth.

With such a travesty being exacted upon the country at this critical period in it's history, one must wonder then, how a few men of very modest means could manage to ride out this distressing holocaust, and turn for themselves, and indeed (much more for those who followed them) the tide of defection and despair into rejuvenation and victory.

The founding fathers of this great Lodge had their taproots anchored in spiritual soil, the soil that is forever fertile and never barren.

Old documents and records withered with age, still bring clearly to mind, that even though our brothers of the past were beset by so many personal and financial problems of their own, they nevertheless found the ways and means to help aid, and assist the poor and indigent in their midst.

Having been appraised of their desires, Bro. Robinson advised them to carry their plea to the then Grand Master, Bro. C.C. Kittrell.  Accordingly this advice was complied with and in due time the Grand Master was contacted and petitioned for a dispensation. This request accompanied with the names of all the Brothers still remaining in the Occasional Lodge.

Grand Master C.C. Kittrell took the request under advisement and having satisfied himself as to the sincerity of the Brothers, did grant a dispensation in 1923.

Named by Grand Master Kittrell as the principal officers of the new Lodge were:

             Worshipful Master .......................................... G.W. King

             Senior Warden ............................................... W.E. Byrd

             Junior Warden ........................................….... L.N. Allen

The charter was finally granted on December 8,m 1924 and bore the name that we still use today, SONS OF LIGHT LODGE No. 120, FREE AND ACCEPTED MASONS.

From evidence gathered from some of the pioneers of this Lodge, plus scraps of written evidence, we are led to the belief that the name chosen by our founding fathers was a direct link to their native state of Florida. The sunshine state by these her sons though far removed, but still are remembering. Throughout the years with the passage of time, it is the conclusion of Sons of Light Lodge with a membership from many other native states the old association has taken on a different meaning. It has a more significant meaning today.

Sons of Light today means a common band of friends or rather Brothers searching constantly for that light that removes us from the areas of darkness and despondency. The light that brightens our paths and is a guiding beam for our future endeavors.

Over the years the rich heritage left us has suffered no infringement but has indeed become more concrete with new ideas.

Throughout the recent years the Lodge has been honored with the distinction of having several of its members serve the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge as appointed officers.

The first Grand Master from Sons of Light Lodge No. 120 was the Honorable Lorenzo Cruger, Must Worshipful Grand Master 1986-1987-1988.

And so from the year of its charter in 1924 with Worshipful Master George W. King, Sons of Light Lodge Continues to advance towards the future and further Light.
