SAMUEL KING #18

An Arkansas native, Samuel King has been a resident of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania since the mid 1970’s and he transferred his Blue Lodge membership to Letort Star Lodge #18 shortly on arrival. His assignment to Letterkenny Army Depot ended four years in sunny Hawaii and began duties in the rolling green hills of the Cumberland Valley. Later, King completed his first career of twenty years having attained the rank of Major in the United States Army Ordinance Corps. His exemplary service was acknowledged and rewarded many times during those years that included participation in the Vietnam War. Following his military service Sam embarked upon his second career at Pennsylvania Blue Shield, now Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield where his leadership and managerial skills served him well as part of the administrative team.

His current career is “giving a little back to our community” where he is Chairman of the Boards of the Keystone Health Center and Franklin County Housing Authority. Sam serves on Boards of the Chambersburg Hospital, Letterkenny Industrial Development Authority, and Chambersburg Community Improvement Association. He has been a Rotarian for almost ten years.

In 1967, Brother King was initiated into freemasonry by George B. Swanson Military Lodge #144 located in Nurenburg, Germany. His first job was Assistant Secretary. He is a member of Harris Chapter #26, Holy Royal Arch Masons, Himyar Temple #17, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Nimrod Consistory #9 and Commanders of the Rite #9, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and the Council of Royal and Select Masters #9. Brother King is a member and Past Worthy Patron of Jeptha Chapter #4, Order of the Eastern Star. He has served the Grand Lodge on several committees and as Worshipful District Deputy Grand Master. Also, Brother King is a former District Lecturer in Deborah Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.

Sam received his secondary education in the Magnolia, Arkansas Walker High School District and a bachelor’s degree from Chaminade University of Honolulu after having studied at Arkansas A.M.& N. College at Pine Bluff. He is a member of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church where he serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees. He and wife, Annie, (Past Worthy Matron #4) are the proud parents of four adult daughters who along with their spouses have provided them with three grandchildren and a granddog.
